The Abiriba Communal Improvement Union UK (ACIU-UK), Registered Charity No. 1216671, is a registered charity open to all who share our commitment to community, culture and mutual progress. Founded on the values of the Abiriba people — a community originating from Abiriba, Ohafia Local Government Area, Abia State, Nigeria, with a proud history of enterprise, craftsmanship, education and self-help since 1942 — ACIU-UK operates as a fully inclusive British charity.
Our membership, events, programmes and activities are open to all members of the UK public. We began our work in London and are committed to expanding our reach across England, guided by our motto: “Self-help is the surest path to progress.”
To foster good community relations by creating a platform for members of the Abiriba Community and the wider UK public to participate in community events with a view to promoting communal integration, intercultural understanding and good community relations across the United Kingdom.
ACIU-UK’s strategy for 2025–2030 is built around five strategic goals:
The Abiriba Communal Improvement Union was founded in 1942 in Abiriba, Ohafia Local Government Area, Abia State, Nigeria, on the enduring principle of self-help and communal solidarity. ACIU-UK grew from this same spirit as the Abiriba diaspora in Britain organized to support one another and stay connected to home.
Barrister Kalu Ifegwu opened his home in Oxford Gardens, London, as a contact hub and meeting place for the Abiriba community. It was from this base that ACIU London was formally created under his leadership. This founding era included his wife, the late Elder Mrs Nwakaku Ifegwu (née Nkobi), alongside the late Chief Engineer Onyike and wife, the late Chief Engineer Amoji Ireke and wife, the late Chief Kalu Inyima and wife, and Dr Kalu Orji and wife — several of whose children and grandchildren remain active in the community today.
Chief Okenwa Onyije, at the time a master’s degree student in the UK, was a prominent figure within ACIUUK — reflecting the community’s early links to education among the diaspora.
The Abiriba community in London continued to formalise and strengthen, shaped by the vision and dedication of a wider circle of foundation fathers and mothers, including the late Dr Okeke Azuh, Dr Kalu Orji, the late Chief Onwuka Kalu (of Onwuka Interbiz), Chief Otah Ibe Agbai Otha, the late Chief Eme Kalu Igwo, Chief Jumbo Jumbo, Chief Eleanya Odu, Chief Joe Ejemole, Ure Otha, Madam Inyang and Madam Ogbeyalu Okoh, among many others.
Following the death of Chief Nnanna Kalu in a London hospital, ACIU-UK was reconstituted in December 1992. Initial meetings were held at Chief Nnanna Kalu’s house in London, attended by Chief Eme Igwo Kalu, Chief Okeke Azu, Chief Kalu Inyima Eke, Chief Onuma Oko Odeghe, Mr Otah Agbai Otah, Mrs Ureh Agbai Otah, Chief Irukwu Kalu and Dr Kalu Orji. Chief Okeke Azu was elected President, with Chief Eme Igwo Kalu as Secretary.
ACIU-UK adopted its formal Constitution on 28 October 2023 and was registered as a charity with the Charity Commission for England and Wales (Registered Charity No. 1216671), formalising its structure and opening its mission to the wider UK public.
ACIU-UK hosted HRM Eze Kalu Kalu Ogbu, the Enachioken of Abiriba Kingdom, in the United Kingdom to mark the Silver Jubilee of his 25-year reign — his first visit to the UK diaspora as monarch. The welcome address was delivered by Prince Eleanya Uche-Eme, President of ACIU-UK, before Abiriba chiefs and elders, High Chief Sunday Obasi (President of ACIU Europe), and representatives of ACIU country chapters across Europe.
Abiriba is a kingdom in Ohafia Local Government Area, Abia State, Nigeria, long recognized for its tradition of enterprise, craftsmanship, education and self-help — values reflected directly in ACIU’s founding motto, “Self-help is the surest path to progress.”
The kingdom is led by the Enachioken of Abiriba, the traditional monarch of Abiriba Kingdom. The current Enachioken, HRM Eze Kalu Kalu Ogbu, ascended the throne twenty-five years ago and marked his Silver Jubilee in 2026, the year of his first visit to the UK diaspora. Chiefs and elders of the kingdom carry the traditional titles Eze Inyimoka and Uke Ji Agbala.
Abiriba society is organised through an age-grade system in which every generation is represented and every voice is heard, reflecting a shared, generational commitment to the kingdom and its institutions. The age grades referenced in ACIU-UK’s own community include Uke Iwang Nmang, Uke Ji Agbala and Uke Ekpankuma Ndi Ichie.
Abiriba indigenes today have a presence across the length and breadth of the United Kingdom — from London in the south to the east and west of England, and as far north as Scotland — working across medicine, law, engineering, business, education and public service, while maintaining strong ties to Abiriba identity and the Enachioken Institution.
